Boiling is one of the simplest and most popular ways to cook most tubers.

Boiled yam, potato or sweet potato, especially yam, is common in most homes.

The boiled tubers most times are served with sauce, stew or soup.

On the other hand, roasting is another way to cook yam. 

It’s not commonly prepared in most homes,

Most often they are bought from food vendors.

Roasting has a different taste and feel, it’s a bit dry 

This process does not require water to cook the food.

Aside from yam other tubers such as potatoes, sweet potato, cassava and cocoyam are boiled and roasted too.

Steps On How To Boil And Roast Yam

How to Boil Yam

Ingredients 

  • Yam
  • Salt (optional)
  • Water

Steps

  • Peel off the outer skin and wash
  • Cut the yam into small sizes
  • Put the yam in a pot add water to cover the yam
  • Add salt (optional)
  • Place the pot on the stove 
  • Allow to cook for 30 minutes (this time will vary depending on the quantity of yam been cooked)
  • Once the yam is soft ( pass a fork through the yam to confirm this), 
  • Drain out the water from the pot
  • Serve yam with any sauce, stew or soup of your choice.

How to Roast Yam 

Ingredient

  • Yam

Steps

  • Preheat the oven at 250 degrees 
  • Wash the yam thoroughly to remove sand from the outer skin.
  • Cut the yam into smaller sizes
  • Place the yam into the oven
  • Allow to roast for 30 to 50 minutes 
  • Check the yam from time to time and turn it over so that all sides are cooked.
  • Place a fork into the yam if the yam is soft then it’s fully cooked.
  • Bring the yam out of the oven and serve with any sauce, stew or soup of your choice. 

Follow the same steps to boil or roast potatoes, sweet potatoes, cocoyam and cassava.
